Leaving Portland: Breathtaking Views, Horrible Weather

Our trip from Portland took us through part of the beautiful Columbia River Gorge, as we cycled on the Historic Columbia River Highway. There are several striking waterfalls along the Highway, including the famous Multnomah Falls, at 620 feet the second highest year-round waterfall in the United States. The weather, like the views, was striking: it kept changing rapidly, at times torrential rain, at other points major hailstorms, and occasionally bright sunshine. We cycled through it all. Furthermore, the high temperature for the day (51 degrees) was a record low high temperature for May 4 in this location. We ended our day at the lovely Skamania Lodge, treating ourselves to a spacious room and delicious dinner.
