A Day of Contrasts Along the Columbia River

Wednesday was a day of contrasts. We began the day cycling in the Columbia River Gorge, with tall mountains rising steeply on both sides of the river. By midday, the mountains had melted away, leaving rolling hills adjacent to the river. We began the day at a posh golf/spa resort with high-end dining, and ended it at a cheap (but very adequate) roadside motel in a town whose two restaurants were McDonalds and Subway. At all times, however, the sights were wonderful, the weather was good, and the biking was great.
